Tales, techniques, tricks and tantrums from one of the UK’s top portrait photographers. Never just about photography but always about things that excite - or annoy - me as a full-time professional photographer, from histograms to history, from apertures to apathy, or motivation to megapixels. Essentially, anything and everything about the art, creativity and business of portrait photography. With some off-the-wall interviews thrown in for good measure!

Ep.73 - Spread A Little Joy
Sunday Apr 05, 2020
Sunday Apr 05, 2020
How is everyone doing? I have to be honest, I am finding it all a little surreal - if it weren't so catastrophic it would be fascinating: from the chaotic economy to the psychology of being interned in your own home, I would love to be reading about this in the history books rather than living through it.
However, life continues and I am naturally a pretty positive kind of person so we crack on and do what we can to keep the business going and to add a little joy to the world.
Enjoy!

Ep.62 Think About The WHY Not Just The WHAT!
Thursday Nov 07, 2019
Thursday Nov 07, 2019
In this episode, I ponder on WHY on earth I am taking the shot? There has to be a reason, right? Surely I am not just lying in the dirt for the fun of it!
In this day and age it is all too easy to simply take the photograph because you can - not because it's a good image or there's a profound reason to take it. These are my thoughts on some reasons why you should create that image - and some thoughts on not bothering if there's no good reason to.
Enjoy!

Ep.61 Interview With Su Kaye, MPA Chair Of Judges
Monday Oct 28, 2019
Monday Oct 28, 2019
It's always a pleasure when I get to sit and chat with someone with such a wide and interesting view of photography as Su Kaye, MPA's Chair Of Judges. I've known Su for a few years and, as ever, she is intriguing, knowledgeable and engagingly honest about her life, career and what the future holds for her and the photography industry.
As always, I asked my interviewee to choose a book or two for our ever-expanding library and she chose the following brilliant editions:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1846149649/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_bx1TDbYEFFBMM Obama: An Intimate Portrait: The Historic Presidency in Photographs
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cyclops-Collection-Photographs-Albert-Watson/dp/0821223887 Cyclops: A Collection of Photographs by Albert Watson
I've used the Amazon links for these (as these offered the best value I could find) but they're available in various online booksellers.
Enjoy!

Ep.51 Thinking About Clients
Sunday Jun 09, 2019
Sunday Jun 09, 2019
Well, it's just me in this podcast: me, a microphone, a couple of hours in the car and Friday night rush hour traffic.
Clearly I had time to kill so in this recording I chat away about bits and pieces but mostly about figuring out clients and why you have to stay positive no matter what happens. I also take the opportunity to add a new book to the Photographer's Library: Hug Your Customers by Jack Mitchell. I admit it's been a while since I read it (and I am NOT necessarily advocating ACTUALLY hugging your customers but this is a good book for some ideas about building your business!)

Ep.34 Interview With Martin Baynes Of Graphistudio
Wednesday Nov 21, 2018
Wednesday Nov 21, 2018
One of the great joys of creating this podcast is that I get to talk to lots of people who I genuinely like and find interesting. This week it’s Martin Baynes, Sales And Marketing Director For Graphistudio UK And Ireland. Sarah and I have been friends with Martin for a very long time now and so I thought it would be fun to put that relationship to the test and stick him in front of a microphone!
We have used Graphistudio albums for about ten years now and their incredible products sit right at the heart of our business (our clients love them - particularly the hand-finishing and the gorgeous leathers!) but the reason I asked Martin to come and be interviewed is because his experience is much broader than that and he brings a viewpoint that encompasses so much of this industry.

Ep.32 Learning Lessons In Las Vegas
Monday Nov 05, 2018
Monday Nov 05, 2018
In this podcast, I have returned from a family trip to Las Vegas where I saw the most amazing things, ate incredible food and had a wonderful holiday. Along the way, I learned a few lessons about how it feels to BE a customer and how some people can make you feel valued (and others struggle with the concept!) In the end, a great customer experience can lead to great sales!

Tuesday Oct 23, 2018
This episode is an interview with the industry giant that is Kenny Martin. Kenny started out as a photographer, ultimately running one of the most succesful Venture Studios in the UK up in Edinburgh. These days he spends most of his time travelling the length and bredth of the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia helping photography studios to be, well, profitable - not something that comes naturally to every photographer! He's also a very lovely (and very entertaining) guy!
If you'd like to see some of Kenny's photography (or learn more about his consulting services) head over to his website.
This podcast is a little longer than our normal but the chat was just to interesting to cut short!

Monday Oct 15, 2018
Monday Oct 15, 2018
This episode is a live Q&A taken from the Master Photographers Association "Meet The Masters" day. Myself and James Musselwhite FMPA were fielding questions from the floor (no prepping!) so what you hear is raw and heart-felt. The topics discussed range from "what is your signature image" to "how do I spend less time editing" and "how do you market yourself".

Ep.23 Interview With Jeremy Price, MD Graphistudio UK
Saturday Jul 28, 2018
Saturday Jul 28, 2018
Ah, in this episode I have a chance to sit down with an old friend of ours, Jeremy Price, the Managing Director of Graphistudio UK. Graphistudio is the biggest album supplier in the world and the inventor of the original 'lay-flat' wedding book - something we have built our business around here. We mostly talk about the industry, what is happening and how photographers can get more out of Graphistudio and their products. We have worked with Graphistudio for many years now and have built a great relationship with them but when you're starting out it can be daunting. Jeremey gives some advice on how to get information and start your journey with them.
Oh yes, and Jeremy ignores a call from his partner and I get cross about bank accounts. Hey ho.
