Tales, techniques, tricks and tantrums from one of the UK’s top portrait photographers. Never just about photography but always about things that excite - or annoy - me as a full-time professional photographer, from histograms to history, from apertures to apathy, or motivation to megapixels. Essentially, anything and everything about the art, creativity and business of portrait photography. With some off-the-wall interviews thrown in for good measure!

Ep.59 Constancy Or Invention: The Photographer’s Dilemma
Tuesday Sep 17, 2019
Tuesday Sep 17, 2019
Well, I'm back on the microphone! Had a bit of a break as the summer peak workload kicked in but once more, I am sitting in the cab of the Land Rover Defender, muttering musings into the microphone on the move. Haha, a little alliteration for you.
Anyway, this episode's topic is the choice between constancy or invention: should we, as photographers, creatives, artists, strive for constancy - recognisable, familiar images - or push the boundaries of invention, looking for new images, new ideas, originality.
Of course, there is no easy answer to this; it is more of a discussion about personal preference and effective business choice, but it's an interesting topic nonetheless and one that was actually driven by conversations with my clients so I thought it might be of use.
Let me know your thoughts!
Enjoy!

Ep.58 Interview With Melanie East, Newborn Photographer
Wednesday Aug 07, 2019
Wednesday Aug 07, 2019
In this interview, I get to spend a very happy hour in the company of Melanie East, an extraordinary Newborn Photographer and Trainer: Melanie is known around the world for her passion and creativity for newborn photography and is the author of the book The Art Of Newborn Photography. She is equally passionate about running a business which is key to the success of any social photographer!
We get to talk about how (and why) she became a newborn photographer; her views on safety; running a business; the love of the sales process and her taste in soft furnishings (which, it has to be said, is flawless.)
Her chosen book - which I initially struggle to spot under a huge pile of publications that permanently resides on her coffee table - is the Icons Of Photography by Peter Stepan which is a wonderfully worthy addition to our ever-expanding library. And you can get 2nd-hand copies for less than a fiver! Bargain.
Enjoy!

Ep.55 Interview With Karen Massey, Photographer
Monday Jul 15, 2019
Monday Jul 15, 2019
"You soon start to learn a lot more about business"
In this interview, I get to talk to Karen Massey, wedding and portrait photographer. Karen is a successful photographer and business owner, having started out owning a beauticians and then transferring her business skills to setting up a photography studio. She talks about how she has always worked, how she had to 'soften her accent' (not something you could be asked by an employer to do in this day and age!) and her plans for her new venture: RISE PFP, a group for professional female photographers.
Plenty for everyone in this podcast from business insights to how she runs her weddings. Oh, and she's really lovely too!
Not only did Karen bring ideas for books for our little library, but she brought the actual books too!
- The first is A Coastal Reflection by Mary Shayler. This can be found here on Blurb books
- The second is the Aston Martin Centenary Collection Programme 1913-2013. One for all you petrol heads out there! As I suspected in the podcast, this isn't one that you can buy (though a few copies do appear to be on eBay.) A real one off for our library!
Both worthy additions to our library!

Ep.52 Interview With Tom Stogdon, Sculptor
Monday Jun 17, 2019
Monday Jun 17, 2019
One of the greatest pleasures of recording this podcast is that I get to talk to all sorts of people and, in this episode, it gave me the opportunity to chat with an incredible, internationally renowned sculptor, Tom Stogdon.
We talk about all things creative from leaving his job as a greengrocer (his love of arranging fruit and vegetables in many and various ways is still with him) to how you develop your own, unique style. And all of this with the sounds of chickens, cockerels and song birds in the background.
You can see his stunning work here.
Tom mentions Richard Serra - you can find a list of some of his books here. He also mentions the book Play With Your Food. One for you and the kids!

Ep.50 Interview With Terry Hope, Editor, Professional Photo Magazine
Sunday May 26, 2019
Sunday May 26, 2019
In this podcast I get to chat with Terry Hope, the long standing editor of Professional Photo Magazine and its newbie publisher, having acquired the magazine just a few short weeks ago.
Having trained as a photographer Terry went straight into journalism and has worked on titles as varied as Camera Weekly, Amateur Photographer and Professional Photographer. He was part of the team that launched Bright Publishing 13 years ago and was launch editor of Digital Photo Pro, which morphed into Professional Photo a few years back. As the new owner Terry is looking to shake up the title and to introduce lots of fresh ideas and online features, and to kick things off a new website at www.professionalphoto.online has just been launched.
In this interview, he chats about his life, career, the industry (magazine and photography) and how he used to play bass in a punk band.
During the interview, as we always do, Terry added the book "Dogs" by Elliott Erwitt to our photographer's libary - you can buy your copy at Abe Books. Our library is growing fast (we order a copy of each of the books mentioned as I have always loved being surrounded by books!)

Ep.45 Photography Judges Should Not Be Rude
Monday Apr 15, 2019
Monday Apr 15, 2019
It's just me this episode, wittering away about the week that's been and something that was raised during a recent presentation to a camera club: that photography judges can be pretty rude. And I don't think it's right or proper that this is the case: judges should be polite, constructive, inspiring, entertaining and, most of all, supportive.
During this episode, I also mention the announcement of The 2 Fellows Workshop - details for the 2020 workshop in Graphistudio's Castello Ceconi can be found at www.the2fellows.co.uk. We'd love to see you there!

Ep.44 Interview: Scott Johnson, The Edge Photography
Sunday Apr 07, 2019
Sunday Apr 07, 2019
So it's been a week or three since recording a podcast primarily due to being out on location in Italy co-hosting The 2 Fellows workshop with David Stanbury (shameless plug: if you'd like details of the 2020 workshop then head over to the2fellows.co.uk where we'll be releasing details for next year.)
In this podcast, I get to chat (in a VERY loud restaurant) to the inimitable wedding photographer, Scott Johnson, about his work, his history and his business. Lots of great things in here - listen out for how selling files on USB nearly cost him his business (his words, not mine.)
Also listen out for a cacophony of culinary sound effects in the background!
Scott mentions a couple of books in the podcast:
Both these books are well worth a read - I'm ordering them for our studio library!
Enjoy!

Ep.42 Portraits On A Cruise Ship? Things You Never Considered.
Sunday Mar 03, 2019
Sunday Mar 03, 2019
It's just me for this episode: me, a microphone and my musings on creating portraits when on board a ship.
When I first encountered the luxury cruise ship that was to be our home and business for the next month, I thought that creating images on board would be a simple extension of what we do here at the studio. Of course, there are similarities but there are also innumerable unexpected factors to consider. Such as what happens when the ship changes it's bearing or how the different spaces of the ship are utilised during the day, making picking a spot that bit more complicated!

Ep.39 - Interview With David Calvert
Tuesday Jan 22, 2019
Tuesday Jan 22, 2019
In this episode, it is my great pleasure to interview renowned photographer David Calvert FMPA FBIPP who is not only a wonderful photographer, but a true gentleman in the industry as well!
The conversation talks about his passion for portraits, how he first became a photographer, his aversion to debt (he learned that the hard way) and how he came to photograph a family's pet dog that had already ceased to be. There are many useful nuggets in here - about anxiety, running a photography business and how getting qualified can help negate your insecurities.
During the interview he mentions a couple of photographers - notably David Bailey and Patrick Lichfield - and refer's to Lichfield's book The Most Beautiful Women which was published back in 1981. If you're curious, you can buy a secondhand copy of the book for just a few pounds on Amazon UK.

Ep.38 Interview With David Stanbury
Sunday Jan 13, 2019
Sunday Jan 13, 2019
In this interview it is my pleasure to be interviewing a great friend of mine and supreme wedding photographer, David Stanbury FMPA FSWPP FBIPP, where we talk about how he became a photographer, how being forced into a position where it had to make money might not have been such a bad thing (though it didn't feel like it at the time) and why he prefers red cabbage to Brussel sprouts. Who knew?
You can see more of David (and his wife, Jane's) work here.
We're also talking about the workshop myself and David are going to be hosting in Italy towards the end of March this year (details can be found at www.the2fellows.co.uk). At the time of publishing the podcast, we have a couple of places left so if you fancy a week talking of nothing but the business of wedding and portrait photography, drinking a little wine, eating a little pizza and laughing an awful lot then this is the workshop you've been waiting for. Visit the website to see why.
Dave also mentions an amazing book during the interview: it's called Shades Of Grey by the incredible Oscar Marzaroli and you can still get copies on Amazon.
